Even the demons believe—and shudder!” James 2:19 ESV

Simply believing that God exists is not the same as trusting Him.

Even the demons know who Jesus is.

The question is not merely:

“Do I believe Jesus existed?”

The deeper question is:

“Have I trusted Him as my Savior?”

Jesus Gave a Serious Warning

One of the most sobering passages in Scripture is Matthew 7:21–23.

Jesus described people who called Him “Lord.”

They used the right language.

They could point to religious things they had done.

Yet Jesus said:

“I never knew you.” Matthew 7:23 ESV

Those words should cause us to think carefully.

These people did not appear to be strangers to religion.

They spoke as though they knew Christ.

But Jesus said He did not know them.

The problem was not that they lacked religious vocabulary.

The problem was that they lacked a true relationship with Him.

Christian Words Cannot Change the Heart

A person may learn Christian language simply by being around Christians.

Children raised in church can learn very quickly what answers adults expect.

Someone can learn to say:

“Jesus is my Savior.”

“I’m saved by grace.”

“I gave my heart to Jesus.”

“I’ve been born again.”

Those are important truths.

But repeating the words does not make them personally true.

Salvation is not learning the correct answer to a Bible question.

It is recognizing that we are sinners who cannot save ourselves and placing our faith in Jesus Christ.

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 ESV

This is not about saying a particular phrase perfectly.

It is about genuine faith in Christ.

A Prayer Is Not a Magic Formula

Sometimes people say:

“I prayed the sinner’s prayer when I was little, so I know I’m saved.”

There is nothing wrong with praying to God when we come to Christ.

Prayer is a natural response of a heart that is turning to Him.

But the words themselves are not what save us.

There is no special prayer that works like a formula.

We are saved by Christ.

A person can repeat words without understanding them.

A person can say a prayer because a parent, teacher, or pastor told them what to say.

The important question is not:

“Did I repeat the right words?”

It is:

“Was I truly trusting Jesus Christ to save me?”

The Heart Matters

Scripture repeatedly points us beyond outward appearances to the heart.

God is not impressed by religious performance.

He knows what is real.

Romans 10:9 says:

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” ESV

Notice both are present.

There is confession with the mouth.

But there is also belief in the heart.

Christian words without genuine faith are only words.

When We Truly Know Christ

Knowing Christ changes something.

That does not mean Christians become perfect.

We still struggle.

We still fail.

We still need forgiveness and growth.

But when Christ saves us, He begins a work within us.

There should be a growing desire to know Him, obey Him, turn away from sin, and live differently because we belong to Him.

Jesus said:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 ESV

That is a beautiful picture.

Jesus does not merely know our religious vocabulary.

He knows us.

And His people desire to follow Him.

Examine What You Are Trusting

Perhaps you have been around Christianity all your life.

You know how church works.

You understand the terminology.

You know what Christians believe.

You may even be able to explain the Gospel to someone else.

But have you personally trusted Christ?

No one else can answer that question for you.

Your pastor cannot.

Your parents cannot.

Your spouse cannot.

Your friends cannot.

God knows the heart.

So instead of asking:

“Do I sound like a Christian?”

Ask:

“Do I know Jesus Christ as my Savior?”

There is an eternity of difference between the two.

Christian language cannot save us.

Religious knowledge cannot save us.

Knowing Bible facts cannot save us.

Jesus saves.

And He invites us to come to Him in faith.

A Question for You

If someone asked you, “What is the difference between knowing about Jesus and actually knowing Him?” how would you answer?

<p
