September 28 – Your Kingdom Come
Scripture
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 (ESV)
“Thy kingdom come, they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (KJV)
Encouragement
It is natural for our prayers to begin with what is happening in our own lives.
We pray about our families, our health, our finances, our decisions, and the burdens we carry. God wants us to bring those things to Him.
But when Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He lifted their eyes beyond their personal needs.
“Your kingdom come, your will be done.”
Those words remind us that prayer is not primarily about asking God to accomplish our purposes. It is about surrendering ourselves to His.
When we pray for God’s kingdom, we are asking Him to work in hearts and lives. We pray for the Gospel to reach those who do not know Christ. We pray for believers to faithfully represent Jesus. We pray for churches and missionaries sharing His Word. We pray for God to use our own lives for His purposes.
And then we pray something that can be difficult:
“Your will be done.”
Those words place everything we have been praying about into God’s hands.
Our plans.
Our families.
Our futures.
Our unanswered questions.
Our deepest desires.
We are saying, “Father, I want what You want more than I want my own way.”
That kind of prayer requires surrender, but it also brings freedom. We do not have to control every outcome. We can trust the One whose purposes are greater than anything we could plan for ourselves.
As you pray today, look beyond your own needs.
Ask God to accomplish His purposes in you, through you, and around you.
Prayer
My dear heavenly Father,
May Your kingdom come and Your will be done. Help me not to become so focused on my own needs that I forget Your greater purposes. Draw people to Jesus, strengthen Your people, and use my life to point others toward You. I surrender my plans, desires, and future into Your hands. Above all else, I want Your will to be accomplished and Your name to be glorified. In Jesus’ merciful name, amen.
Thought for Today
Prayer is not asking God to fit into my plans; it is surrendering my plans to His purposes.
