Draw Near to God
Scripture
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8a (ESV)
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (KJV)
Encouragement
One of the greatest blessings of prayer is not simply receiving answers. It is drawing closer to God.
James gives us a beautiful invitation: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
Prayer brings us into fellowship with the One who already knows us completely. We do not have to approach Him pretending that everything is fine. We can come with our struggles, our failures, our questions, our gratitude, and our deepest needs.
But the context of James 4 also reminds us that drawing near to God involves more than bringing Him our requests. It means humbling ourselves before Him, turning from sin, and submitting our lives to Him.
As we spend time with God in prayer, our hearts begin to change. Our desires become more aligned with His. We become more aware of areas that need to be surrendered. We learn to want His will more than our own.
Perhaps you began this week wanting God to change a circumstance.
He may answer that prayer.
But He may also use your time in prayer to change you.
Today, draw near to Him—not only because you need something from Him, but because you need Him.
Prayer
Dear all-knowing Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting me to draw near to You. Search my heart and show me anything that is keeping me from close fellowship with You. Help me to humble myself, turn from sin, and surrender my will to Yours. Teach me to seek You not only for what You can do for me, but because I love You and want to know You more. Draw me closer to You as I walk with You in prayer. In Jesus’ merciful Name, amen.
